Babies on their own: First Night out is a Fright!
On their first overnight outside there was rain, wind and strong thunderstorms lit up the sky. Mama stayed inside.
On 7/1/04 Mottled Duck was taken. Mottled Duck had the most spectacular markings and a unique pink bill. Unfortunately he was also fat and slow. He must have made a great meal.
ATTACK!
On 6/14/04 Ms Muskovi was brutally attacked by a mink or small weasel while protecting her babies. Initially it was expected that she would not survive. However thanks to the care of The Animal Hospital of South Gorham, and 2 weeks of intensive care, it appears that Ms Musckovi has turned the corner. She is back with her children and we are cautiously optimistic of a complete recovery. On a sad note, Simon was "taken" on 6/21. Simon, adopted two years ago, was a member of "The Boys" and particularly close to Aflac. There was no sign of struggle and we hope that Simon had a quick demise...we know that he had a good life in the time he spent with us.

THE BANISHMENT
BlackQuack was a handsome duck...a duck with a presence...bold & confident. But in the end, his dominance of the pond was his undoing.
For days now BlackQuack has driven off The Honker...who by the way is our sole flying duck...and a distraught Wheezer has waddled off into the forest in search of her. They took up residence in a primordial swamp pond deep in the woods, subsisting on bugs and weeds.

Nearly every day The Wheezer would waddle home to check out the situation and dine on gourmet duck food. But every time The Honker tried to return she was driven away by BlackQuack. After repeated attempts to appeal to BlackQuack to temper his behavior, he was banished from the realm on 6/9/4.
With this action, calm and civility has returned and it is hoped that The Honker & The Wheezer will also.
BlackQuack has returned to Hession Hill, where he is now mate-less and reduced to foraging. Let all ducks be warned...discrimination by breed, color, length of beak, or curl of tail feathers will not be tolerated. All ducks are equal here.

Growing Up.

Ms Musckovi sat on 13 eggs for a month. Ducks sit on eggs for 29 days getting off for only a few minutes a day. Each egg must be turned every few hours. Between 9/20/3 and 9/22/3 five eggs hatched. The rest were duds...although Ms Musckovi was reluctant to give them up.

The five chicks and mom were contained by bales of hay in a corner of the garage. By day 3 the babies had managed to climb on top of the hay. (unlike other ducks Musckovis like to jump up on things)
Ms Musckovi had not been outside for 5 weeks and was very anxious chew some grass. So on day 3 we allowed her to march out her new family. It was a picture perfect early fall day with a warm breeze and bright sunshine. A recent rain had the stream to the duck pond flowing. Although baby ducks are not able to swim (they sink) the stream was perfect for dunking and splashing about. Ms Musckovi got a much needed bath.
All the while, "the boys" looked on. They had but one thing in thier collective quackheads...making more ducklings. We had to stand guard keeping them at bay. Ms Musckovi's 2 youngsters from a previous laying looked on.
Although it's too early to determine paternity on each of the 5 babies...it's clear from the brown coloring of 2 that Simon scored.
